Science

Science is mandatory for all students from Year 7 to Year 10.

Science 7-10 provides a way of inquiring about the world around us. It explores evidence and investigates ways to discover, develop and produce solutions to real-world problems. Science emphasises the skills for working scientifically, as well as critical and creative thinking to address scientific issues.

In Years 11 and 12, students can choose from different science disciplines, including:

  • Biology
  • Chemistry
  • Earth and Environmental Science
  • Investigating Science
  • Physics.

In Year 12, students who are studying at least one other science subject may also choose to study Science Extension.

The content of the curriculum is divided up into four broad areas - The Physical World, Earth and Space, The Living World and The Chemical World. A fifth area of the syllabus is called Working Scientifically, where students are engaged  in applying skills to real life situations, problem solving, questioning, investigating, processing and communicating about the work that they are studying. In the senior school, Sarah Redfern High School offers a wide range of courses including Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Senior Science. The Science curriculum is delivered in an integrated manner providing an appropriate balance between the hands on work, field work and theory.

As a faculty we believe that all students deserve a chance to reach their full potential. We strive to engage students in unique and challenging learning to help them become inquisitive learners ready to tackle the challenges of the 21st Century. The Science faculty provides a chance for students to become scientifically literate and develop an appreciation of science as an investigative process.

All the laboratories are well equipped including biological and geological specimens and preserved  microscopic slides in showcases. Computer software is available in each laboratory where students are using their laptops and ICT skills to complete their class work.
